This is something JK said to me at least 20 years ago.
And the ironic thing is that they are often the person who is supposedly the very closest to oneself in the world. A very hard thing indeed to deal with.
Of course: poignant rather than ironic. Unbearably poignant when you reach that realisation - because after all you've only got one chance at getting it right and the years soon run out. As I'm not far off 50 this has really struck home.

I agree totally. But I find it almost unbearably poignant rather than ironic.
